General Terms and Conditions of Participation in the “Write with Us” Program
1. Definitions
1. Organizer: Publishing house Multa Verba Books (MVB).
2. “Write with Us” Program: an internal editorial initiative by independent publisher MVB enabling authors to present their original, unpublished literary works (fairy tales, short stories, poems, comics, essays or diary entries) to a wider audience. Selections are made for Story Lux magazine or MVB book editions by the editorial board at its discretion. This is not a public call for entries, but a continuous in-house project.
3. Author: a natural person who creates a copyrighted work—i.e., shapes an original work bearing a personal stamp through creative activity (writing, composing, drawing, etc.). Upon creation, the author acquires moral and economic rights under the Slovenian Copyright and Related Rights Act (ZASP).
4. Submission: any original, unpublished text sent to the editorial board for publication consideration. Submissions must be in Slovenian, Italian or English, not exceed 800 words for magazine publication or 1,500 words for book publication, and must not have appeared elsewhere.
5. Editorial Board: a panel of MVB staff (marketing, design, production), previously published authors and external experts (librarians, educators, illustrators) who collectively evaluate submissions for alignment with Story Lux’s vision and MVB’s target readership, combining publishing, creative and specialist perspectives.
2. Object of Collaboration
Participation entails sending original, unpublished literary works in Slovenian, Italian or English (max. 800 words for magazine, 1,500 words for book) to the editorial board for potential publication in Story Lux magazine or MVB books, with the goal of showcasing high-quality content aligned with MVB’s editorial vision and audience.
3. Content Requirements
The program is open-format—not a themed competition—and imposes no genre or topic constraints. Works must respect length limits (800 words magazine, 1,500 words book), target age groups (e.g., children 6–9, teens 12–15), avoid morally or ethically questionable material, and must not encourage dangerous or unlawful acts. The editorial board may reject any submission failing these criteria.
4. Submission Procedure
Authors prepare their text in .docx or .pdf format, naming the file “WRITE WITH US – Title of Work,” and email it with a 2–3-sentence synopsis, intended age group, genre and word count to info@mvb.si. The email subject must read “WRITE WITH US – Author Name (or Pen Name) – Title of Work.” If under 18, the author must include the parent’s or guardian’s contact details. Authors retain a copy of their work as MVB does not archive originals.
5. Selection Process
The editorial board reviews all entries and reserves up to three months to complete the selection. First, a technical check (format, length, language) is done; then the board debates content suitability in an editorial meeting; and finally, works passing the review are approved by majority vote. All authors are informed of the outcome by email; unsuccessful submissions receive no feedback.
6. Copyright and License
Copyright remains with the author under Copyright and Related Rights Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 21/95 of April 14, 1995, as amended up to October 26, 2022), granting moral and economic rights. By signing a written contract, the author grants MVB an exclusive license to reproduce, distribute, publicly perform, translate and otherwise exploit the selected work in all formats and territories for five (5) years from contract signature, after which rights revert automatically to the author.
7. Compensation
Selected authors receive €0.15 per word, based on the final word count and covering all editions (print, digital, translations, adaptations). Payment is made within 30 days of official publication and receipt of invoice. Taxes and other liabilities are the author’s responsibility.
8. Data Protection
MVB processes authors’ personal data (name, pen name, contact information, date of birth, and guardian details for minors) solely to run “Write with Us” (communication, selection, notifications, contracting). Legal bases are contract performance and legal obligations under GDPR (Art. 6(1)(b) & (c)) and Personal Data Protection Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 94/2007 of October 16, 2007). Data are stored up to five years after collaboration ends, not shared except with necessary service providers or by legal requirement. Authors may exercise rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection by contacting info@mvb.si.
9. Special Conditions for Minors
A child under 15 cannot submit independently; the parent or guardian must submit on their behalf (ZDR-1, art. 211, i. e. Employment Relationships Act Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 21/2013 of 13 March 2013). If selected, MVB initiates the child-labour permit process with the Slovenian Labour Inspectorate under ZDR-1. Published works credit only the minor’s pen name, initials or nickname.
10. Contractual Framework
The relationship is governed by the Slovenian Obligations Code (OZ) via a written author’s agreement detailing rights granted, compensation, duration, termination options and reaffirming the author’s inalienable moral rights.
11. Liability and Limitations
MVB ensures ethical, moral and quality standards for published material and fulfills its contractual duties (publication, payment), limiting its liability to the amount paid in compensation. MVB is not liable for third-party claims regarding content infringements; the author assumes all legal responsibility and indemnifies MVB against claims, damages and legal costs. MVB is also not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential damages.
12. Amendments
MVB may amend these terms at any time by posting an updated version online; authors who do not lodge a written objection within 30 days are deemed to accept the changes.
13. Final Provisions
These terms take effect on publication on MVB’s website. If any provision is invalid, the rest remain in force. All disputes are subject to the jurisdiction of the Ljubljana District Court.

Multa Verba Books provides illustrators participating in the “Draw with Us” program with a competitive and fair fee, set individually according to the complexity and scope of the work as well as the illustrator’s status (self-employed cultural worker, amateur illustrator, fine arts student, or minor illustrator). In determining the fee amount, the publisher follows the recommendations of the Association of Slovenian Visual Artists, adapted to each author’s experience and status.
